THOMAS SCHÜTTE: I am not alone
The documentary "Thomas Schütte - I am not alone" provides an insight into the life of the renowned artist and his working methods in the workshop. His work is always about people. His works have gravity and lightness, but they also show damage, power relations, fears, dependencies, evil, weird and beautiful figures. Schütte produces sculptures of enormous size by hand, with grinding, sawing and milling being part of his daily work routine.
Schütte studied from 1973 to 1981 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Fritz Schwegler and Gerhard Richter. Today, he is one of the most important contemporary artists and is represented in all major museums and collections worldwide. Working with his hands, drawing, watercolor painting, modeling, shaping with clay and modeling clay, building with wood and other materials are at the heart of his artistic activity. A film about Schütte is long overdue and filmmaker Corinna Belz has hit the right moment: a major retrospective is planned at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and in Venice.
