ULRIKE THEUSNER: Shadow Sides

Powerfully colored and expressive, the works of artist Ulrike Theusner (*1982) treat the big-city experience of generations X to Z, the world of theater and nighttime pleasure, nature far from the realm of digital noise, and everyday people. At first sight, her motifs are spontaneous and sketched with vibrating lines, offering a kaleidoscopic view of our modern society. But at second glance, they are liable to impart a gloomy, deceptive vision. The artist explores themes that also define the work of August Macke, such as portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, and genre scenes. She employs a color palette that is vibrant and perceivable as positive. Upon closer examination, however, this impression is subverted and even distorted into the grotesque.
