THOMAS SCHÜTTE: Women—10 years Skulpturenhalle

In conjunction with Thomas Schütte’s exhibition at K21 in Düsseldorf, the Skulpturenhalle is showcasing a group of 18 female figures that Schütte created between 1998 and 2006.
These are women cast in bronze, steel, and aluminum, through which Schütte explores a theme that has played a central role in sculpture since antiquity and has been revisited by leading artists in the modern era.

With his female figures, Schütte engages with this eventful history and responds to it in his own way—tenderly and aggressively, ironically as well as elegiacally.
This series of sculptures, in which Schütte demonstrates his approach to the theme in terms of content, form, and technique, was the inspiration for designing a sculpture hall specifically suited to it.

Now, for the first time in a long while, all 18 sculptures of women are on display again, marking the 10th anniversary of the Skulpturenhalle. Six of the female sculptures are on view each week, with the remaining twelve covered with cloths.
