NEO RAUCH: The Dream of Reason
From July 8 to October 15, 2023, MO.CO. presents the first French retrospective of the painter Neo Rauch.
Born in Leipzig in 1960, Neo Rauch is considered one of the most important contemporary German artists, surrounded by an aura of legend and mystery. His globally acclaimed work has influenced an entire generation of European painters, especially in France, where he was discovered in the early 2000s. Influenced by his artistic training in East Germany and later associated with the emergence of the New Leipzig School, Neo Rauch has developed a unique style: figurative and seemingly narrative, but altogether resistant to easy interpretation.
Neo Rauch's enigmatic and ambiguous paintings require long, slow contemplation to understand their complex composition, their play with scale and their richness of symbolism. They make unexpected connections between eras and places, history and the present, and draw on references to the Italian Renaissance, German Romanticism and Socialist Realism. By practicing a "dreamlike" style of painting in which he freely assembles scenes and allusions, Neo Rauch offers the viewer diverse and idiosyncratic reflections on history, heritage, the power of art, the role of the artist and the impasses of our contemporary society.
